Originals are able to compel regular vampires and are significantly faster and stronger than them. They can also rip out the heart of anyone who tries to fight them. Due to being the first bloodline of Vampires, Original Vampires are indestructible and cannot be killed by anything on earth aside from the White Oak Stake.

Unlike the rest of the Originals, Mikael has the ability to feed on vampires as well as mortals. He also wields a white oak stake in order to aid in his hunt for vampires.
