After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the Austrian Empire emerged as a powerful political entity in Central Europe. Austria experienced a period of change and adaptation as it sought to maintain its influence and establish power in the shifting geopolitical scene of the nineteenth century.

The years following 1806 saw a transition in Austria's political structure and ambitions. The Habsburgs undertook a policy of centralization in reaction to the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, with the goal of creating a more cohesive and efficient empire. During this time, authority was concentrated in the hands of the imperial court, and the bureaucracy was strengthened.
