Organized by local aristocrats with the support of the officers from the army of the Duchy of Warsaw, the Lithuanian Army was established in July 1812, yielding troops from the administrative territories of the Principality of Lithuania.  Its principal task was forming a rearguard for Napoleon's Grand Army during its advance to Moscow.
