The Grenztruppen, were the border troops of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) from 1946 to 1990. With approximately 47,000 personnel at its peak it was one of the most effective, and feared, border guards in the Eastern Bloc. 
The Grenztruppen's main role was preventing Republikflucht, the illegal migration from the DDR,
