About the art: The Mansion of the Plates was said to be haunted by the ghost of the unfortunate maidservant Okiku, who broke one of ten precious blue-and-white porcelain plates that were a family heirloom. She was murdered by the enraged master of the house, and her body was thrown into the well. The versatile Hokusai excelled not only at landscapes and figures but also at vividly imagined scenes of the fantastic, as in this series of five prints illustrating well-known ghost stories.
