This is a French Charleville musket, produced in various forms from 1717 to 1839. Over seven million were produced over that period -- twice as much as the British competitor, the 'Brown Bess.' It's a flintlock musket -- meaning that a piece of flint would be put into the firing mechanism to produce a spark, igniting the black powder inside.  


The original was too high up for the strap to work, by the way. That's why this exists.
