With the introduction of the Nr. 22A Service Cap, the need to differentiate officers from Enlisted Men in both formal and combat environments even during the winter months arose, and the solution was the production of metal cap badges. Based on the shape of an oak wreathe, with the Army's Griffon symbol in the middle, the Officer's Oak Wreath Badge was designed to evoke the design of older Officer's collars which shared a similar design.
