Japanese picture scrolls are books in which the pictures and text are
revealed as the scroll is unrolled. They first appeared around the end of the Heian period (794-1185), and during the Edo period (1603-1868), many different types of picture scrolls were produced, including typeset and multicolored scrolls. Overseas, they are regarded as one of Japan’s most prized works of art due to their beauty.
