Over seven million were produced over that period -- twice as much as the British competitor, the 'Brown Bess.' It's a flintlock musket -- meaning that a piece of flint would be put into the firing mechanism to produce a spark, igniting the black powder inside. As a side note -- a musket is not a rifle! Muskets are smoothbore -- the inside of the barrel is not rifled.
